Mandatory Reporting of Violence and Abuse in Healthcare Settings
rc2learnAbout This Course
Mandatory reporting of violence and abuse is a legal, professional and ethical duty for everyone working in healthcare. This program gives healthcare professionals a clear, practical framework that explains what counts as violence or abuse inside healthcare environments, why immediate reporting is the cornerstone of patient protection, and the frontline role of the healthcare practitioner in detecting these cases. The program opens by defining the four types of abuse - physical, emotional or psychological, sexual, and neglect - and reviews the risk factors that allow such incidents to occur in busy clinical environments. It then moves to the skill of recognizing indicators, distinguishing physical, emotional, behavioural and neglect signs, and teaching you to read patterns rather than isolated events, such as repeated injuries at different stages of healing or an explanation inconsistent with the findings. The program then walks through the official procedures and policies step by step: reporting as soon as suspicion arises, the official channels inside the facility and at national level, accurate documentation of observations and of the statements of the patient and witnesses, confidentiality rules, and the legal protection that shields anyone who reports in good faith from retaliation. It also clarifies the responsibilities of physicians, nurses and social workers and the value of interprofessional teamwork. The program closes with practical applications and case studies drawn from real situations, including the case of a patient who asks you not to report, how to balance patient autonomy with the duty to protect, and how to conduct a sensitive conversation with empathy and clarity. The program is self-directed and is followed by a fifteen-question assessment with an unlimited number of attempts, and then a short evaluation survey.
